Funeral services for Lavern Faye Parish Thomasee, 90, of Many, were held on Monday, July 25 at 10 a.m. at Warren Meadows Funeral Home chapel in Many, with the Rev. Ronnie Sandifer and Rev. Jim Phaup officiating. Burial followed at Aimwell Cemetery in Toledo Bend. Visitation was at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 24 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many. Lavern Faye Parish Thomasee was born October 19, 1925 in Marthaville. She passed away on July 23, 2016 at her residence in Many. She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Thomasee; parents Cleveland Gordy Parish and Annie Elizabeth Parish; and granddaughter Allison Grace Gentry. She is survived by her daughters: Winona Thomasee Sepulvado and husband Ray of Zwolle, Patsy Thomasee Gentry and husband Earl of Natchitoches, Sylvia Thomasee Lonadier and husband Robert of Ruston, Sharon Thomasee Lonadier and husband Larry of Toledo Bend, sisters: Rita Doolittle of Natchitoches, LA, Vera Gislar of Dallas, Texas, brother Lodus Parish of Many; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and host of nieces, nephews and friends.

SHELBY CHANDLER BOYD

Memorial services for Shelby Chandler Boyd will be held Saturday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Caster. He was born June 7, 1949 in Natchez, Miss. and passed away July 21, 2016 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. He graduated from Ferriday High School in 1967 and served 12 years in the Navy in aviation mechanics. He earned a drafting technology degree at Del Mar Tech in Corpus Christi and a BA in English Bible at Baptist Christian in Shreveport. Ordained to the gospel ministry in 1983 and served Christ in Christian Harmony in Campti, Yankee Springs in Winnfield, Hickory Grove in Coushatta and Vista Ridge in Lewisville, Texas. Shelby loved the Lord and was a consummate “people person.” He was introduced to Mexico missions while a church planter in Texas. He also served 21 years as a missions coordinator in the Yucatan. He co-founded the Yucatan Evangelistic Association with Gene Murphy and others. He coordinated mission trips to share the Gospel, encouraged developing congregations and constructed simple and functional places of worship. Shelby Boyd spearheaded the formation of several seminaries or bible schools for rural pastors in the Yucatan and was the driving force behind the building and development of Casa Kim/ Casa Murphy children’s homes. He planted and encouraged numerous congregations in Tabasco and Chiapas. Shelby is preceded in death by his parents, Earcel Boyd and Maxine Honeycutt Boyd. He is survived by his wife Pat of Castor; son Shelby Christopher and daughterin- law Kim of Natchitoches; sister Lili Mettles (Percy) of Gilbert; brothers Sonny (Carnetta) of Beaverton, Ore., Leland (Judy) of Flower Mound, Texas, T.J. (Sandra) of Natchitoches and Ben (Sandra) of Mansura; sister-in-law Peggy Sullivan (Tony) of Castor; brother-in-law Bobby Holley of Castor; a host of nieces and nephews; co-laborers in the ministry; and a genuine host of U.S. and Mexican friends.

Funeral services for Sarah Elizabeth Merrell will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 29 at Galbraith Church of God in Marco, with Rev. Steve Miller and Rev. Joe Sharp officiating. Interment will follow at Merrell Cemetery in Lena. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. on July 28 until service time on Friday at Galbraith Church of God in Marco. Sarah Merrell, 33 years of age, passed away July 24, 2016. She was born April 12, 1983 in Pineville. She had a warm and bubbly personality and always lit up the room wherever she entered. She always made everyone feel welcome with her smile and love that she showed. She had a special bond with the many children that she cared for over the years, and would always strive to help a friend in need, no matter the cost. Her lovely voice will be missed on the Earth, but she will now use it to sing praises to the Lord for all Eternity. She is survived by her parents, Annette and Wade Merrell; her sister, Rachel Holman and her husband Demetrius; one nephew; two nieces; her fiancé, Ryan Dunn; her maternal grandparents, Daryl and Marcella Petefish; her paternal grandmother, Lenora Brown and her husband Eugene; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her uncle, Iva Owen Merrell, Jr.; and her paternal grandfather, Iva Owen Merrell, Sr. Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Jason Layssard, Gary Miller, Brett Nugent, Demetrius Holman, William Merrell, Jacob Merrell and Stephen Cameron. Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Dunn, Joseph Dunn, Casson Layssard and Wade Holman. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Galbraith Church of God in care of the Merrell family.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Nora Roque Balthazar will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 28 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Natchez, with Father Charles Ray officiating. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Catholic Church Mausoleum in Natchez. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on July 28 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with a rosary at 10 a.m. Nora Balthazar “Boonie,” 78 years of age, passed away July 21, 2016. Nora was born December 25, 1937 to the late Charley and Daisy Llorens Roque in Bermuda. She grew up in Natchitoches and attended Central High School, where she was the homecoming queen. She married the love of her life, Joseph C. Balthazar, on June 28, 1958 and shortly thereafter moved to New Orleans, where they resided until Hurricane Katrina. Later, they retired and moved back to Cane River. She was a preschool teacher for 37 years at Sheila and Sharon’s Nursery School, where she taught 4 and 5 year olds. She was a Christmas baby and everyone made sure that she never got shorted. Even as she received these gifts, she still outdid them with the gift of herself. She was committed and involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchild. She took great pleasure in watching them compete in various sports cheering them on in any kind of weather. She was a Christian mother and was heavily involved in her church, St. Augustine Catholic Church in Melrose. Nora is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph C. Balthazar; daughter, Angela Balthazar Vaughn and husband Leon K. Vaughn; son, Joseph “Joey” C. Balthazar, III. and wife Jean; grandsons, Paul Balthazar, Leon K. Vaughn, II. and Austin B. Vaughn; great granddaughter, Thamerin Balthazar; sisters, Elizabeth Bernestine and Theresa Norman; brother, Joseph L. Roque, Sr.; brother-in-law, Herbert Rachal; sister-in-law, Lorraine Conant; special cousin, Elizabeth LaCour; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charley and Daisy Llorens Roque; sisters, Annie Mae Bernestine and Jesweater Metoyer; brothers-in-law, Albert Bernestine, Gerard Bernestine, and Wilfred Rachal; sisters-in-law, Loretta Roque, Linda Rachal, Zenobia LaCour and husband Ernest LaCour, and Maxine Flournoy and husband Leon Flournoy Sr.

Chineatta Holmes was born on September 1, 1961, to the union of her parents Willie Gray and Sharon Jackson. She was the owner of “Juz A Bite” in Natchitoches. Chineatta passed away on July 23, 2016 at the age of 54. She was preceded in death by her husband. She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Jacoby Jackson & Teherin Jackson both of Oakdale, LA, Karlton Roberson of Lafayette, LA, Katrina Holmes of Houston, TX. Her parents, Willie Gray of Bronx, NY, Sharon Holmes of Dallas, TX. Brothers, Carlos Jackson of Dallas, TX, Montreal Jackson of Atlanta, GA, Bobby Jackson of Dallas, TX, Troy Gray, Willie Gray, LaToya Gray, Latrisha Gray all of Bronx, NY, Gary Gray of Winston-Salem, NC, Zany Gray of Mount Airy, NC Chineatta also leaves behinds her companion of many years Mr. Karl Sowell and a host of other loving family and friends. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 2 at the Israel Light Baptist Church from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, funeral service conducted under the leadership of Rev. Funeral services for Mary Lee Antilley will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 at the Blanchard - St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches, with Rev. Doug DeGraffenreid officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Methodist Cemetery in Natchitoches. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3 p.m. on July 30 at the Blanchard - St. Denis Funeral Home. Mary, 91 years of age, went to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, July 26, 2016. She was born September 13, 1924 to the late Walter and Pearl Scarborough Pine in Gansville. She was the youngest of 10 children. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Natchitoches. She was a homemaker until the death of her husband fifty years ago; when she began working to support her four daughters to make sure they were taken care of and raised as good Christians. Mary was a volunteer Pink Lady for 25 plus years at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center and Long Term Care. She dearly loved her volunteer work and helping others in their time of need. She will be dearly missed by all those she leaves behind. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy LaCour and husband Richard and Martha Dalme and husband Herbert, both of Natchitoches; eight grandchildren, Angela LaCour Cook and her husband Eben, Billy LaCour and wife Abbie, Leslie Jacob Zientek and husband Richard, Andrew “Andy” Jacob and wife Madi, Misty Dalme, Leah Dalme, Barbara Fernandez Fontenot and husband Scotty, and John Fernandez, III; nineteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Aubie Kruesel of Beverly, Mass.; and two son-in-laws, Jay Jacob and John Fernandez Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. “Dub” Antilley Jr.; her parents, Walter and Pearl Scarborough Pine; two daughters, Rosemary Jacob and Alma Fernandez; five brothers, Earl, Cecil, Glen, Archie and Jack Pine; and three sisters, Vera Fleek, JoAnna Jones and Martha Ray Kelly. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Billy LaCour, Eben Cook, John Fernandez, III, Richard Zientek, Scotty Fontenot and Andy Jacob. MARY FIELD

Heaven opened its gates and Mary Field was welcomed into her eternal home on July 26, 2016. Mary was born December 3, 1915 to Homer Bybee and Ola Mae Bridges. Her father passed away when she was a young child and her mother later married Thomas Burke, who raised her as his own daughter and he always had a special place in Mary’s heart. Mary graduated from Pickering High School in 1935, one of a class of thirteen. She married Edwin B. Field on February 29, 1936, on Leap Year Day. They always joked that they only had to celebrate an anniversary every four years. Mary loved her garden and her home but most of all she loved her family. Her grandchildren have many happy memories of time spent with her. Mary celebrated her onehundredth birthday on Dec. 3, 2015, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed Field, who passed away on their 48th anniversary; her sister, Louise Bybee; her brother, Buford Bybee; and her sister-in-law, Bea Bybee. She will be sadly missed by her sons Tommy Field and wife Zoe and Jimmy Field and Sandi; her grandchildren, Ed, Gene, Virginia, Andy and wife Kate, Casey and wife Haley; great-grand daughters, Evelyn, Corinne and Lydia Field; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches, with Rev. Josh Currie officiating. The family will receive friends at the Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home from noon until 2 p.m. on Sunday, prior to the services.

LENA ALLBRITTON

Lena Reece Allbritton, age 96 of Robeline, Louisiana, went to be with her heavenly father and loved ones early Saturday morning, July 30, 2016. She was born in Many on April 3, 1920 to Levi and Losyer Reece and was the youngest of four children. Mrs. Allbritton graduated from Many High School in 1938. After graduation, she worked in San Antonio before moving back to the Robeline area, where she met and married George Allbritton, originally of Tullos, on April 26, 1947. The couple purchased land and started a family, which was her life’s joy. Mrs. Allbritton was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Robeline, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Before her husband’s retirement, she was a strong supporter of his ministry and worked at a number of churches affiliated with the Northwest Louisiana Baptist Association. She was also very active in the family’s construction and cattle businesses for most of her life. Through the years, Mrs. Allbritton was an active member of her community. In 1964, she was recognized by the Louisiana Agriculture Extension Service, where she was acknowledged for her years of work with the area’s 4-H Club. In 1972, Mrs. Allbritton became the first woman elected to serve on the board of the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Natchitoches Parrish. She served in various roles at the Los Adaes Foundation, where she was known for the many quilts she created with friends over the years. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Allbritton proudly served as Treasurer of the Central Cemetery Foundation. She was also a 30-year cancer survivor. Mrs. Allbritton was known for her devotion to her faith, family and friends. She is survived by three children Laurice Lambert, Sheila Peeples (Randy), and Nathan Allbritton (Lisa); grandchildren Laura Wilson, Tim Isgitt, Brian Ray, Andrea Pickett, Amanda Brady, Jenivie Leschber, and Cade Maroney; 16 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband George Allbritton; father, Levi Reece; mother, Losyer Reece; sisters, Myrtis Simmons and Vertis Leach; brother, Elmer Reece; daughter, Karen Rinehart; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Allbritton; sons-inlaw, Freddie Bozeman and Larry Lambert; and grandchildren, Jason Lightfoot, Justin Allbritton and Leah Eubanks. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches, with burial at Central Cemetery in Robeline. Reverends Brian Ray and Truman Leach officiated the service. Pallbearers were Tim Isgitt, Brad Pickett, Cody Wilson, Connor Wilson, Kyle Bickham, Wayne Berry, David Lambert and Dale Ford. Honorary pallbearers were Kade Maroney, Garet Ray, Landen Ray and Cole Pickett. A special thank you goes to Lisa Laurent for her devotion to Mrs. Allbritton over the last few years, and also to the caring team at Hospice of Natchitoches.

George Warren Woodel was born Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1932 in Robeline. He passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016 at his residence in Clarence. He was preceded in death by his mother, Truly Woodel; father, Leroy Woodel; brother, Roy Woodel; wife, Dessie Simmons Woodel; and son, Van Woodel. He is survived by his wife, Millie Woodel of Clarence; daughter Peggy Sanderson and husband Randy of Robeline; step-daughter, Patty Chandler and husband Donnie of Winnfield; step daughter Brenda Arnold and husband Bruce of Benton; step-son, Chris Gallien and wife Susan of Youngsville; sisters Betty Sprague of New Jersey, Trudie Lawson, Norma James and Ann Booker, all of Shreveport; six grandchildren, six step grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, one great grandson; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Carol Sue Clark (Mott) a long time resident of Natchitoches, passed away at Willis Knighton Pierremont Hospital in Shreveport Sunday Aug. 7, 2016. Carol was born on May 23, 1951 in Natchitoches. Carol graduated from Provencal High School in 1969 and Delta School of Commerce in 1972. She worked briefly at Exchange Bank and Northwestern State University before she married Fulton V. Clark Jr. on Feb. 21, 1976. She was an avid cook and decorator. Her biggest joy was cooking for her husband. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Cleo Spangler. She is survived by her husband Fulton and daughter Corine. Family and friends may visit Wednesday, Aug. 10 from 5-7 p.m. at Blanchard St Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. following visitation. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Natchitoches, with interment at Memory Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Burial followed at Memory Lawn Cemetery in Natchitoches. Visitationwas from 9 a.m. until service time on Aug. 8 in the funeral home chapel. Jimmy Lambre Jr., 80 years of age and a resident of Natchitoches, passed away Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 in Natchitoches. He was born Nov. 21, 1935 to James Alton Lambre Sr. and Mary Lee Duncan Lambre in Natchitoches Parish. A long-time cattle rancher and cotton farmer in Bermuda, Jimmy was a hardworking and successful man. He has been a resident of the Courtyard of Natchitoches for many years and the family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff for their care and compassion during his later years in life. He is survived by his children, Amy Lambre of Houston, Texas, Jennifer Watson of Houston, Texas, Lorie Warren of Houston, Texas, Gaylee Prindle of Dallas, Texas and James Alton Lambre III of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Kayla Watson, Ashley Watson, Dylan Watson and Kate Prindle; and a sister, Anne Lambre Gilmer of Natchitoches.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the funeral home. Bernice McLaren, 92, passed away Aug. 7, 2016 in Springville, Ala. She was born Jan. 3, 1924 to the late John and Jessie Spurlin in Kent County, Texas. She is survived by her sons, Earnest McLaren and wife Brenda and Chriss McLaren and wife Tammy; grandchildren, David and Dawn McLaren, Daniel and Chris McLaren, Brett and Amanda McLaren, Wendy and Jason Muenzer, Jason and Jessica McLaren, Sonny Jackson, Michael and Latonya Jackson; 12 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Spence McLaren and a daughter, Judy Jackson. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are David, Daniel, Brett and Jason McLaren, and Wendy and Jason Muenzer. Honorary pallbearers are Sonny and Michael Jackson.

LYNN RAY GIEGER

Lynn Ray Gieger passed away July 25, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. W. Geiger Sr. and Lillie M. Crain, four brothers, three sisters and one great grandson, Jakob Bolyer. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Rowell Gieger; and four children, Jesse W. Gieger and wife Anita of Denver, Colo., Audreen Gieger Hawkins of Spring, Texas, Wendell Gieger and wife Janine of Coushatta, Peggy Gieger Bolyer of Coushatta, and Kristi Gieger Moore and husband Jared of McKinney, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ray attended Natchitoches High School. He was Secretary of the Debate Team and graduated in 1950. He was baptized in 1951 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a minister for 66 years. He attended Kingdom Ministry School in Ithaca, N.Y. in 1966 and trained as a public speaker and spoke to groups of up to 10,000 on bible and family matters on many occasions. For 66 years, he was an advocate for the poor and disadvantaged and was personally involved in building many houses of worship and homes of disaster victims. He tirelessly provided personal assistance and family counseling to hundreds of families. For 52 years, Mr. Gieger secularly worked as a Purchasing Agent and General Manager of a manufacturing company in Waycross, Ga. and was well known as a hard wood floor installer and refinisher. He retired in 2009. Memorial services will be at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Coushatta Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.

Interment will follow at Lambertown Cemetery, Robeline. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. at Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home Tuesday, Aug. 9 in Natchitoches with Rosary prayer service held at 7 p.m. She passed away on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016 in the presence of her family in Natchitoches. She was born on January 28, 1928 in Robeline. Bell worked for many years for the Natchitoches Parish School System where her smiling face could be found in the lunchroom serving most of her grandchildren over the years. For 30 years, Bell worked for the Council on Aging at the Marthaville Community Center delivering meals to shut-ins, having lunch, drinking coffee and visiting with friends. Bell was well known for huge Sunday dinners provided for her family. You were never left in wonder of what she was thinking; she loved to dance, have a good time, had the most infectious laugh and lived life to the fullest. She was never without her lipstick. One of her greatest joys was the beauty of her garden and flowers. She was a devoted mother and grandmother always sacrificing for her family. Bell is survived by her five sons: Wayne (Sarah), James (Corky), Doyle (Carolyn), Donnie (Norma) and Bruce (Melinda). She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Shelli Adams, Shauna Hicks, Samantha LeBas, Tara Saxon, Anthony Pleasant, Michael Pleasant, Jamie Pleasant, Amanda Hoff, Kelly Pleasant, Pete Pleasant, Kyle Pleasant, Josh Pleasant and Hannah Pleasant; and sixteen great grandchildren: Garrett, Katie, Jacob, Sarah, Sydney, Rhemy, Odette, John, Collin, Madison, Will, Sophia, Sawyer, Blake, Andrew and Owen. She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jimmy” Pleasant, her parents Louis & Clara Freeman, four sisters, Clara Lee Tullos, Nell Horn, Inez Ammons, and Norma Freeman; and six brothers, Earnest, Hershel, Bobby, J.W., Herman, and Ray Freeman. Those honored to be pallbearers will be Garrett Murchison, Jacob Murchison, John Saxon, Collin Saxon, Josh Pleasant and Kyle Pleasant. The family wishes to thank the Courtyard of Natchitoches and Willis Knighton Health Systems for their care of Mrs. Ora Bell. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Joseph Beaudoin Jr. will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cloutierville. Rev. Christian Ogbonna will serve as celebrant. Interment will follow at Cloutierville Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5 at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home in Natchitoches. Mr. Beaudoin, 70 years of age and a resident of Cloutierville, passed away July 29, 2016 in Shreveport. He was born January 23, 1946 to Joseph Beaudoin Sr. and Theresa LaCour Beaudoin. He proudly served in the United States Army. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Although he is gone, he will never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Beaudoin Sr. He is survived by his mother, Theresa Beaudoin; wife, Dorothy Beaudoin; son, Joseph Beaudoin III, (Laura Beaudoin) grandson, Damien Michael Beaudoin and his wife Haley Marie Beaudoin; granddaughters, Selena Beaudoin and Elise Beaudoin; great grandson, Matthew Carter Beaudoin; sisters, Theresa Coutee, Mary Beaudoin (Jesse) and Karen Cyiark; brothers, William Beaudoin, Larry Beaudoin and Patrick Beaudoin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. JIMMY D. LONG SR

Funeral services for Jimmy D. Long, Sr., widely recognized as one of the most prominent and respected political and state government figures in Louisiana history, are scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Natchitoches. The Rev. Dr. Calvin Phelps, Sen. Gerald Long and the Rev. Tommy Rush will officiate, and there will be private family graveside services at American Cemetery in Natchitoches following the funeral. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Long, who died Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident near his home on University Parkway in Natchitoches, was born Oct. 6, 1931, in the Tannehill community in Winn Parish. He is the brother of current Louisiana Senate President Pro Tem Gerald Long of Natchitoches. A member of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors since 2001, Long served eight consecutive terms in the House of Representatives from 1968 to 2000. Colleagues in the House and Senate adopted a resolution during his last term honoring Long as “Dean of the Legislature.” He served as chairman of the House Education Committee for 16 years and also held membership on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and Joint Legislative Budget Committee. He was a longtime member of the 16-state Southern Regional Education Board and was recognized across the region as an authority on education-related legislation. Long, who attended Northwestern State University, helped obtain millions of dollars over the years for construction and renovation projects at the school and for highways, bridges and other major improvements in his legislative district. He introduced legislation to establish the prestigious Louisiana Scholars’ College at Northwestern and was also the author of a bill to create the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, a residential high school in Natchitoches for gifted and talented students. Recognized by the Shreveport Times as one of the “100 Most Influential People of the Century” in Northwest Louisiana, Long was also presented the Lifetime Service Award in Education from the State Board of Regents for Higher Education. Inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame, Long also received the Public Service Award from the Louisiana Moral and Civic Foundation and the Friends of Education Award from the Louisiana Association of Educators. He was honored as a Louisiana Legend by the Friends of Louisiana Public Broadcasting along with such dignitaries as Terry Bradshaw, Jimmie Davis, John McKeithen, Eddie Robinson, Dave Treen, Archie Manning, Al Hirt and Pete Fountain. Long received numerous other honors over the years, including induction into the Northwestern State Long Purple Line Hall of Distinction, Natchitoches Parish Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year and Natchitoches Jaycees Young Man of the Year. A seven-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, Long was a business owner and cattleman in Natchitoches for more than a half-century. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church and held membership in numerous civic and professional organizations. Long is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Griffin Long, son Jimmy D. Long, Jr., and his wife Dr. Mary Ingram Long, granddaughters Elizabeth, Mary Grace and Anne Michelle Long, brothers Sen. Gerald Long and his wife Rose of Natchitoches, Bill Long of Shreveport and Carroll Long and his wife Susan of Natchitoches. Pallbearers will be Sheriff Victor Jones, Dr. Jim Henderson, Jerry Pierce, Joe Salter, Mike Smith, Russell Long Mosely, Joe Pierson and Johnny Koch. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System and current and former legislators who served with former Rep. Long during his 32-year tenure in the House. The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a scholarship fund at Northwestern State University in honor of Jimmy and Dot Long.

THOMAS LARRY EPPLER

Thomas Larry Eppler entered this world Nov. 28, 1938 in Morrilton, Ark. He departed on Aug. 7, 2016 in Shreveport. He was preceded in death by his step-daddy, George Wesley Henderson and his mother, Florence Geneva (Miller) Henderson Logan. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Carol (Smith) Eppler, one daughter and son-in-law Melanee Jean and Paul David Trimble; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Vernon “Bill” and Melissa Ann (Poche) Eppler; Larry Todd and Janet Carol (Rideour) Eppler; eight grand children and five great-grand children. Tom graduated from Southeastern State College at Durant, Okla. in 1962. He earned his Master and Doctoral degrees from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, Colo. in 1968. He taught on the high school and university levels for 36 years. Tom passed away after a valiant, eight-month fight with mesothelioma. The body was cremated. Tom will be remembered as a committed Christian, loving husband and father and avid tennis player in that order. His goal was to enjoy life. He did! A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at Woodlands Church in Fort Smith, Ark. Arrangements were made by Edwards Funeral Home.
