APRIL COSETTE DONALD WISE

April Cosette Donald Wise, was born in Shreveport, on March 31, 1979, and passed away peacefully at her home in Natchitoches on May 27, 2016 after a battle well fought. We are truly grateful for her life, and that she has been freed from pain, with her spirit now free to fill the hole left in our hearts. April was dependable and hard-working; however, the job she took most serious was that of mother. She made every effort to see that her son, Skylar, grew up to be a well mannered, respectful, educated young man. Following her diagnosis of a terminal illness, her immediate goal was to live long enough to see Skylar graduate with honors. Her strong-willed nature allowed her to accomplish this goal. April faced her illness with selflessness, dignity and determination. She never complained or wanted pity. Even in the darkest hours, she was more concerned with those who loved and cared for her, rather than herself. April is a graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. April is preceded in death by her parents Michael Edwin Donald and Beverly Kaye Vail Donald of Campti. April is survived by her husband, Philip G. Wise and her son, Trenton Skylar Uriah Downs of Natchitoches; her brother Brandon Watson of Fernanda Beach, Fla. A memorial service will be Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Blanchard-St. Denis Funeral Home.

THELMA MARIE MANSHACK PROCELL

Thelma Marie Manshack Procell of Winnfield went to the arms of the Father on June 1, 2016. She succumbed to a short illness after suffering a major stroke in 2011. She was surrounded by family when she was reunited with her late husband of 62 years, David Paul Procell and parents Amos and Elsie Ebarb Manshack. Ms. Marie was born in Ebarb. She met the love of her life and life partner marrying David Procell Jan. 23, 1947. Ms. Marie and Mr. Dave, members of the great generation, gave life to seven children. She was known for being a wonderful cook, generous giver, and an incredible “green thumb.” A plant dare not grow straight, strong, and give off plentiful fruit and blossoms. Like her children and their friends this was a mom who meant business or else… She was a Girl Scout troop leader, catechism instructor, member of the Ladies Altar Society taking pride in making and mending altar cloths and an Elder of the Choctaw Apache Tribe of Ebarb. Ms. Marie taught her children to clean, cook, sew, social graces, and how to do the twist dance and hoola-hoop. She didn’t bear fools gladly, did not gossip (but would pass along a good story ending with “bless their heart”). She loved fishing at their camp on Black Bayou, but her greatest joy was her children and sharing weekends and holidays with them. Her table was laden with hams, roasts, seafood, homegrown vegetables, tamales, meat pies, pies and cakes and biscuits light enough to float from the plate. Ms. Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years David Procell; son Michael Paul Procell, grandsons David Edward Procell, Jr. and Shelby Wayne Bonnette Jr. and grandson-in-law Steve Straughan. She lost her mother Elsie Ebarb Manshack (1940) and her father Amos Manshack, sisters Doris Cherry, Roberta Cherry and brother, Tommy Manshack. She is survived by children Mary Lee Carol Gregorek (Dr. Gerald), Barbara Bonnette (Shelby), David Procell (Tammy), Sharon Gordon (Dennis), Janice Dunbar (Michael), Frank Procell, and daughter-in-law Debbie Carpenter Procell (Michael Procell, deceased, and sister Helen Rivers Miller; grandchildren Leighanna Gregorek DeRouen (Jake), Stephanie Bonnette, Christina Bolton (Greg), Rocky Procell (Lindsey), Dustin Procell (Lauren), Gabrielle Procell Nooner (Sean), Kelley Martin (Brenda), Catherine Straughan, Paul Hunt (Felicia), Daniel Gordon (Jenna), Patrick Gordon, Lori Vines Lofton (Scott), Braxton Procell (Katie), Brandon Procell (Rachel), Layton Procell (Samantha), Devon Knotts (Karl), Clint Procell (Allyson Coleman), Simona Procell, Callie Heisler, Maggie VandeWiele (Josh); great grandchildren Cabel Stockwell (Stephanie), Christian Bonnette (Wayne), Remy and Sam Nooner (Gabrielle), Payton and Presley Procell (Rocky), Camille and Harper Procell (Dustin), Hunter and Misty Martin (Kelley), Andrew, Meredith, and Eli Straughan (Catherine), Kaine and Breanna Hunt (Paul), Jack and Emily Gordon (Daniel), Marlie Heisler (Callie), Clark VandeWiele (Maggie), Ruthie Kay and Elijah and Elam (Layton), Lexie Rae (Braxton), Levi and Jackson (Devon), Alex and Sidney (Clint), Evan Lofton, Ashley Lofton Smith and great great-grandson Brayden. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are David Procell, Frank Procell, Rocky Procell, Dustin Procell, Kelley Martin, Paul Hunt, Kaine Hunt, Andrew Straughan, Braxton Procell, Brandon Procell, Layton Procell, Clint Procell, Shelby Bonnette, Christian Bonnette, Cabel Stockwell, Dr. Gerald Gregorek, Dennis Gordon, Michael Dunbar, Greg Bolton, Sean Nooner, Scott Lofton, Karl Knotts The funeral mass was at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Natchitoches at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 4. Officiating the mass was Father Ryan Humphrey and the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Winnfield, Father Christian Ogbonna. Interment was at the Garden of Memories in Winnfield. Visitation was at Southern Funeral Home of June 3.  The family especially thanks the staff and doctors of Winn Parish Medical Center especially Dr. Mark Shelton, Dr. Eric DuPree, and Dr. Ricky Hendrix. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Ann’s Catholic Church, at 5272 LA Hwy 482, Zwolle, LA 71486. St. Ann’s was Mom’s family parish. St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Ebarb was built on land donated for that purpose by Mrs. Mary S. Ebarb, Ms. Marie’s grandmother. The church was built in 1933. Mom, you were our pride, your smile, the warmth of your voice, and your positive attitude carried us to places we could only dream of as children. Job well done, Mom. You can have that well deserved rest now. You are always with us.

My Mama is now gone

The Lord took Mama home
We all miss her laughter,
magnetic smile and soothing
touch

That we loved so very much
Mama always said “say
your prayers at night”

“That God would guide
through the light”

Mama said “know the 10
commandments
And live them out the best
you can,
That Jesus will always be
within”

Mama said “always try be
number one in whatever you do
That the journey in life is
hard to get through”

Now looking at the stars
above
We know one star is Mama
and her love

Mom’s Tamale Recipe
(she never shared it) Ingredients Tamale Filling
1 1/4 pounds pork loin,
chicken, or ground beef/pork
mix, season with salt & pepper
1 large onion, halved
6 clove garlic
4 dried chile pods
2 cups water
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
Tamale Dough:
2 cups masa harina
1 (10.5 ounce) can beef broth
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup lard
1 (8 ounce) package dried
corn husks
1 cup sour cream
Directions
Place meat into a cast iron pot with onion and garlic, and add water to cover. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer until the meat is cooked through, about 2 hours. Use rubber gloves to remove stems and seeds from the chile pods. Place chiles in a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes, then remove from heat to cool. Transfer the chiles and water to a blender and blend until smooth. Strain the mixture, stir in salt, and set aside. Shred the cooked meat and mix in one cup of the chile sauce. Soak the corn husks in a bowl of warm water. In a large bowl, beat the lard with a tablespoon of the broth until fluffy. Combine the masa harina, baking powder and salt; stir into the lard mixture, adding more broth as necessary to form a spongy dough. Spread the dough out over the corn husks to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness. Place one tablespoon of the meat filling into the center. Fold the sides of the husks in toward the center and place in a steamer. Steam for 1 hour. Remove tamales from husks. Optional: drizzle remaining chile sauce over tamales. Top with sour cream. For a creamy sauce, mix sour cream into the chile sauce.

Sour Cream Pound Cake

1/2 c sugar
1/2 c cooking oil
8 oz container sour cream
4 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients beating at medium speed for 2 minutes. Spray pan with Pam Baking Spray. Pour into a bundt pan, bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Turn off the oven but leave the pan in the oven for an additional 10 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes before turning out of pan to finish cooling. (Note) If Mom used a removal center tube pan (like an angel food cake pan), she would remove the outside ring and allow the cake to cool on the inner ring to keep it from falling apart or cracking. Can also be made in sheetcake pan, loaf pans or cupcakes It’s a beautiful basic cake that can be eaten plain, warm from the oven, dripping in strawberries and whipped cream, sprinkled with powdered sugar, or frosted.

I wander here and there, And finally found a love to share. Together we had laughter and tears, for she is our sweet disaster. With one heart we embraced with love, the little angel sent by one up above. Yet laid unto rest shortly, before we even accept the reality. On this earth life and love you gave, but science had numbered your days. Up above the joys and fears You tiptoed and leave. Mommy is in anguish of losing you our dearest. The sun was shiny and fluffy on your final day, Rainbows and butterflies swept our pain away. Lonely days and tearful nights were not yet over yet mom and dad clasp their fingers together. One day we will see you again our angel baby When our time is over you will walk with us merrily. Someday we will gaze you up high Up above the blue sapphire sky. We will be proud to tell you with a smile, that we are more stronger because of you...having you even just for awhile.”
