Kerlin Caspari Sutton

Kerlin Caspari Sutton, 91, a native of Natchitoches, LA, for over nine decades, entered eternal rest on January 17, 2017. Kerlin was born on September 16, 1925 in his parents’ home in Natchitoches.  A service to honor his life will be held on Friday, January 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Blanchard St. Denis Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service.  Interment will follow in the American Cemetery.
His family legacy was a major factor in his lifelong interest in the history of his hometown and his decision to stay in Natchitoches and create businesses and connections that would contribute to the growth of the community. Kerlin was considered a leading authority on the history of the community. He was a voracious reader and expert of trivial facts concerning Natchitoches. He loved writing, photography, history, Cane River (especially teaching others how to water ski) and dogs. He was a founding member of the Kappa Alpha Order at Northwestern State University and helped with the formation of the Natchitoches Board of Realtors. Kerlin was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Rotary Club and past President of the Natchitoches Northwestern Symphony Society.
Kerlin signed up for the US Army Air Corps even though his 18th birthday was still a few months away. He dreamed of flying planes, but was assigned to radar due to vision problems. This gave him the opportunity to study at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin, and he eventually served at bases in the Philippines, Okinawa, and Tokyo. When he completed his military service, Kerlin retuned to Northwestern, but changed his major to business administration. He had some entrepreneurial interests and wanted to be prepared to pursue these interests. Soon after returning to Northwestern after the war, Kerlin met Margaret Ellen Abington. The couple graduated in 1949 and soon married. They would spend the next 67 years together.
His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. His son, Mark Kerlin married the former Mary Catherine Burke, and added Marshall Cannon, Matthew Landry, and great grandson Jonah Landry to his family. His daughter, Ellen Nita and her husband, Daniel Reeves Donaldson, added their children Jonathan Daniel, and Thomas Mark. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Pete Abington and his wife, Ellen, nieces and nephews, Clay Abington; Julie Abington Brewton and her husband Mickey; Valerie Abington; Doug Abington and his wife Beth and great niece and nephew Katiebeth and Walker; Elizabeth Abington Prejean; Camille Abington Hansen and husband Jim, son Jake Harrington and wife Erynn and great niece Brynn; and Rodney Abington and son Gavin Abington.
Kerlin was preceded in death by his parents, George and Nita Sutton; his beloved mother and father-in-law, Nellie and Douglas Abington; his brother-in-law, Douglas Abington; his sister-in-law Mai Abington; and his nephew, Stephen Douglas Abington.
A special thanks to his friends and caregivers Deborah Haskett and Joe Williams. Thanks also to his friend, David Graham, who made his life so special by their Kisatchie escapades.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers include: Matthew Landry Sutton, Marshall Cannon Sutton, Jonathan Daniel Donaldson, Thomas Mark Donaldson, Leonard Clayton Abington, Douglas Walker Abington, Rodney Crews Abington, and James Michael “Mickey” Brewton. Honorary pallbearers include L. J. Melder, David Graham, Jim Bob Key, Robby Lucky, and Joe Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in the honor of Kerlin Caspari Sutton to the Northwestern State University scholarship fund of your choice at NSU Foundation, 535 University Parkway, Natchitoches, LA 71457 or any other charity of your choice in his honor.

VICTORIA HELAIRE

Funeral services for Mrs. Victoria Walker Helaire will be held Saturday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Karli Pidgeon and Rev. James Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Lawrence Serenity Sanctum in Natchitoches. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 in the chapel of Winnfield Funeral Home in Natchitoches. A second visitation will take place at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 am until service time.

Mrs. Victoria Walker Helaire returned to the loving presence of her God Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 in the care of her beloved boys and her family at her residence in Natchitoches. Victoria was born on Feb. 16, 1941, the daughter of the late Owen “Bum” and Emily Dyas Walker. She is preceded in death by her husband Image “BB Major” Helaire, siblings Jimmie Lee Walker Balthazar and Oria James Walker and her nephew Ruben Balthazar.

As a child, “Vickie” was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Spirit at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church before bringing her boys for worship at Asbury United Methodist Church Natchitoches where she remained until her death. She quietly worked in the background preferring to raise funds for the Green Leaf Tea, but not be a named hostess and caring for the church’s altar linens until her health dictated she could no longer do so. Education and etiquette were important in Vickie’s development. Her education was received at the hands of the Sisters of Divine Providence at St. Anthony Piegay Memorial Church School, the instructors of Central High School where she graduated with the class of 1959 before continuing for a period at Southern University in Baton Rouge.

Vickie’s working life was exclusively as a Bookkeeper and Manager at Conant’s Cleaners. There she met an array of friends and co-workers, a number of which proved to be life-long bonds. Her winning smile and laughing eyes welcomed scores of customers who she delighted in greeting by name each time they visited. Vickie read at least three newspapers daily and always had a love of reading that she passed on to her boys and her granddaughter.

In 1965, Vickie united in Holy Matrimony with the late Image “BB Major” Helaire and, to this union, two children were born, Ronald Keith and Adrian Gary. BB’s blues hit “6th Street Blues” honors their courtship remembering where he first laid eyes on her at her family home at the corner of 6th Street and Texas Street in Natchitoches. It must be noted that Vickie raised her boys alone with God’s grace at a time when society could be unfriendly. She ensured her boys were ready to take on opportunities available to anyone else and that they excel while doing so.

Left to mourn her passing yet celebrate her life are her beloved children Ronald Keith Helaire and Adrian Gary Helaire and his wife Kinyauda Brooks Helaire all of Natchitoches. Forever in her heart and the delight of her life is her granddaughter Megan Adrianna Helaire. Likewise, she leaves her brother Clifford Walker of Dallas, Texas, God sisters Mary Ann Conant Wigley of Natchitoches and Louella Blount of New York, N.Y. Similarly, her life was enriched through her nieces and nephews Emily Balthazar Tillis (Morris), Larry Balthazar Sr. (Leslie), Otis Lewis, Sheryl Walker Roy (Randall), Kimberly Epperson, Ronald Johnson (Stephanie) of Houston, Texas and Alexis Carpenter of Dallas, Texas. She also leaves a large and wonderful host of other relatives and loving friends.

Pallbearers are her sons Ronald Helaire and Adrian Helaire, Paul Anthony, Demetric Latigue, Larry Balthazar Sr., Otis Lewis, Christopher Tillis and Morris Tillis.

“Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord and let your perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

Funeral services for Mrs. Victoria Walker Helaire will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 704 Fifth St., with the Rev. Karli Pidgeon and the Rev. James Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Lawrence Serenity Sanctum in Natchitoches. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 in the chapel of Winnfield Funeral Home in Natchitoches and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Mrs. Victoria Walker Helaire returned to the loving presence of her God Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, in the care of her beloved boys and her family at her residence in Natchitoches. Victoria was born Feb. 16, 1941, the daughter of the late Owen “Bum” and Emily Dyas Walker. She is preceded in death by her husband Image “Major” Helaire; siblings, Jimmie Lee Walker Balthazar and Oria James Walker; and nephew, Ruben Balthazar. As a child, “Vickie was baptized and confirmed in the Holy Spirit at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church before bringing her boys for worship at Asbury United Methodist Church, Natchitoches, where she remained until her death. There, she met an amazing array of friends and co-workers, a number of which proved to be life-long and laughing eyes welcomed scores of customers who she delighted in greeting by name each time they visited. Vickie read at least three newspapers daily and always had a love of reading that she passed on to her boys and her granddaughter. In 1965, Vickie united in Holy Matrimony with the late Image “Major” Helaire and, to this union, two children were born, Ronald Keith and Adrian Gary. BB’s blues hit “6th Street Blues” honors their courtship remembering where he first laid eyes on her at her family home at the corner of Sixth and Texas Streets in Natchitoches. It must be noted that Vickie raised her boys alone with God’s grace at a time when society could be unfriendly. She ensured her boys were ready to take on opportunities available to anyone else and that they excel while doing so. Left to mourn her passing yet celebrate her life are her beloved children, Ronald Keith Helaire and Adrian Gary Helaire and wife Kinyauda Brooks Helaire, all of Natchitoches. Forever in her heart and the delight of her life is her granddaughter, Megan Adrianna Helaire. Likewise, she leaves her brother, Clifford Walker of Dallas; God sisters, Mary Ann Conant Wigley of Natchitoches and Louella Blount of New York, NY. Similarly, her life was enriched through her nieces and nephews, Emily Balthazar Tillis (Morris), Larry Balthazar Sr. (Leslie), Otis Lewis, Sheryl Walker Roy (Randall), Kimberly Epperson, Ronald Johnson (Stephanie) of Houston, Texas, and Alexis Carpenter of Dallas. She also leaves a large and wonderful host of other relatives and loving friends. Honored to serve as pall bearers are her sons, Ronald Helaire and Adrian Helaire, Paul Anthony, Demetric Latigue, Larry Balthazar Sr., Otis Lewis, Christopher Tillis and Morris Tillis. “Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord and let your perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”
