
Funeral services celebrating the life of Virgil Gary McGehee, 85, were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 21 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel. Interment followed at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery at 2 p.m.in Belmont. Rev. John Higginbotham and Rev. Bill Blakely officiated. Visitation was held at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until service time on Dec. 21.
Gary was born on July 31, 1931 in Marthaville to Russell and Nannie Pierce McGehee, and passed away Dec. 18, 2016. Gary proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. After retiring, he moved to Marthaville to hobby farm and raised cattle. Later, he worked and retired as an electrician for The City of Shreveport. He was a member of Mangum United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed the many activities of his Sunday school class and also taught the “Joy Class” for over 20 years. He loved to tell stories of family and U.S. Navy memories. He will be remembered for his beautiful smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Mildred Lee McGehee; three brothers, Everett, Nollie K. and Ed McGehee; three sisters, Freddie Rains, Eloise Downs and Gretchen Greer. Surviving him is son, Lee McGehee and wife Maureen of Conway, Ark.; daughter, Nancy McGehee Allen and husband Wyn of Cheneyville; grandchildren, Jonathan Allen, Jared Allen and Joshua McGehee; three great grandchildren, Alexis Allen, Collin Allen and Cameron Allen; sister, Jane Wells of Shreveport.
The family wishes to thank Garden Court Health and Rehab of Bossier City, Amedysis Hospice and Hospice Nurse, Shannon. He and the family were blessed by the love and care of devoted sister, Jane.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or Mangum United Methodist Church Shreveport.
